Confessions of an 8th Grade VBS teacher/mom…

This is my third year volunteering in the 8th grade class of our church’s VBS.  I love being in this class.  I enjoy the age.  I enjoy getting to know the kids & having fun with them.  I enjoy the teachers.  I enjoy the lessons.  Shedding many tears as the lessons touch my heart.

Until this year.

My son is in the class.

My son, the confident, cocky, cool kid… The one with “mad singing talent” and “no time to memorize” scripture.  That one.  The cute one. Other people find funny, but you just want to find a hole to crawl into… my kid…

Zach 2008-09 8th Grade

Wow, he’s grown up a lot in the past year.  That is his school picture this past school year.  No wonder his knee is hurting from growing so fast!

Zach Florida 09

I came home on Tuesday after VBS and thought, this kid is ruining this for me!  I am letting his attitude ruin it for me!  I am worrying myself into another tizzy.  ANOTHER ONE!  How could I do this?  What if he starts making really bad choices?  What if he rebels?  What if HE ACTS LIKE I DID!!!  WORST-NIGHTMARE-HORROR!!

I wondered how my parents survived without killing me.  I wondered if I would survive without killing him.

Fun stuff.

On the way to VBS on Wednesday morning he made a comment to me… “You just need to stop caring so much mom.  You need to be more like other people’s parents and stop caring so much”  (AHHHHH!!!!!!!)

I had this thought… you know what buddy… you want me not to care?  Today I will not be “your mom” in VBS.  I told the other teachers I was going to ignore him.  He was going to be their problem today.

So, when it was time to practice our music, I sat away from him.  When it was time to walk to our class, I walked with other kids.  When the other teacher was teaching the class, I sat away from him. If I couldn’t see him acting up he seemed to not act up as much.  Of course.  Another teacher said, he is just pushing your buttons.  uh-huh.

Then came time for the next singing practice (we sing with a big group of the whole VBS & with only the 7th & 8th grades)  A couple of the boys were being kinda loud, (not my kid) and I asked them jokingly if I was going to have to sit between them.  They said, “YES!” and I did.  Zach was right in front of us.  I teased the boys and they put their arms teasingly around me.  Fun!  This is what I enjoyed about VBS, letting them have fun to a point and being a part of the fun.

Zach turned around and made some comment.  I turned to the boy next to me and said, “who is that kid and why is he calling me mom?”  We all laughed.

For the rest of the VBS time that day I played the game of ignoring Zach while he played along.  His friends were calling me mom &  I was calling them “sons” and we all just had fun together.

End of problem.

Thursday went completely different.  Zach is no longer ruining my day.

Halleluiah!

Oh, and I told him that if he didn’t have time to memorize five small memory verses, then I didn't have time to take him to the ball diamonds either… funny… he learned them so quickly.

Stinking kid.

Yesterday, I taught the lesson in VBS.  In the 8th grade we really try to focus on life choices.  Like, one of the things we do is visit the county jail.  That day one of the teachers speaks on consequences of sin. With the hope that visiting the jail and having a tour will drive that point home to them.

I was really not sure what I was going to speak about this year.  The paper with the lessons planned out on it says “Evidence of God” beside my name.  In the past I have just kind of gushed my testimony of what has happened in our marriage and told the kids how I have found God to be so big in my life through these trials.

I didn’t feel like I could just gush with Zach in there.  I didn’t know what to do.  I prayed about it.  I came up with a plan.  It fell through.  I kept praying about it.  A couple of Sunday morning’s ago I was up early and the whole lesson just came to me…

I could talk about being a Christian and having tragedy hit you… I could write different scenario's on note cards, tell the kids we were going in a time machine ahead 20-25 years and the scenario's on the note cards are what has happened in their lives over the past 20-25 years.  Then I could ask them how they think they should handle it, and write down their ideas, talk a little about how I have handled it, and give them some scriptures… wa-la!

God you are brilliant!

I didn’t pull the notes from that Sunday back out again until yesterday.  I made up the note cards, typed up the questions I wanted to ask, and it was done.

It went so well. God did so good!!  Here are a few examples of what the note cards said…

    • I am a divorced single parent.
    • I have a non-life threatening incurable disease that has left me disabled for life.
    • I drink, a lot, & no one knows.

I had 30 of these cards.  All different.  I passed them out along with another teacher.  Another teacher, Lora, was passing them out to the back row of girls.  She handed one to a girl, and the girl said, “I don’t want this one”, and handed it back.   Lora handed her another, the girl said, “okay, I’ll take that one”.  And took the first one she had been given.

The kids sat there with their cards silent.  I asked them what they were thinking… “scared”, “mad”, “I don’t like this” were some of the initial reactions… they were getting it.

I had them go around the room reading their cards.  I pointed out to them that while we had said in our time machine that we were all living our lives for Jesus as we passed through time, things like are on these cards still happen to us.

One girl said, “I never really thought about anything like this ever happening to me”.

I told them that if I went around the room and picked up the cards that I had experienced in my life, I would probably pick up 5 of the cards.  And if the other teachers picked up cards they had experienced, many of the cards would be gone.  And if we picked up the cards that our close family & friends experienced there wouldn’t be more than one or two of these cards left.

Then I asked them what they were going to do if these things happened to them.  I had a white board and they gave me thoughts on what they could do if this happened.  They started out with the “good” answers.  You know, “pray”, “grow in my faith”, “start a fund to research my disease in search of a cure”.

Then I asked them about things they could choose to do that were not so good in these circumstances. Again they participated (while Lora threw starbursts to them for their answers, I’m not above bribery and they aren’t either!)  They were really good though.  I think they saw that there is a choice in how you react when things happen to you.

I shared with them a little testimony of how things happened in my life.  I showed them my scripture note cards I started making after my husband left us almost 4 years ago.  I shared a few of the scriptures that have sustained me.

They sat in silence and listened.  I think they got the point.  I hope they won’t forget it.

PRAISING GOD!!  I know how incapable I was of doing the lesson. I know it all came from Him.  He is so amazing to still be using this person who is so inadequate.  Don’t you just love Him!

On a side-note.  I do ask you to pray with me for Zach.  He is at such a critical age.  I do see some very scary tendencies in him.  I also am hearing from other parents things he is saying at school.  Not good things.  I have also heard some things he said to his dad, and what his dad said back, on the visit a few weeks ago, and these are not good either.  I see some of his friends talking about making choices that are not good, and some that are sticking strong with their beliefs.  I see Zach gravitating towards the friends that are making the questionable choices.

He seems to be one that is going to have to learn the hard way.  Wow, do I hate the thought of that.  I know how hard a life is when you have to learn it all the hard way.  When you don’t listen to those around you.  I know. Boy, do I know.

Things this week have gotten better between Zach and I as the week has progressed.  He seems to be a little more accepting and respectful of me.  I hope it is something that we can maintain past these two weeks of VBS.

Vlogemotion: Kids

Tim @ Ft Thompson (who keeps promising to Join my “YOUR gonna Miss This… Moment Carnival, but still hasn’t! ahem!) :) is hosting another week of Vlogemotions!  This week the videos are supposed to be geared done by our kids…

It is always interesting when you have kids in front of a camera… then ask them to talk about their emotions… yeah… interesting… odd… uncensored… and hilarious!

I am trying to convince Leah to be a guest blogger for me this summer!  Wouldn’t that be fun!!  I think so!!

Never a dull moment!  For sure!!  (oh and the other boy in the video is my nephew Sammy)

Glass Half full kinda person…

I have always felt like I am a glass 1/2 full kind of person.  Looking for the good in people.  Trusting people.  Believing for the best.  Hoping for the miracles.  Never giving up.

Lately I have been feeling more like that is getting lost.  Like I can’t see that glass as 1/2 full anymore…

Dreading the worst.

Bracing myself for the next trauma.

Fearful.

Negative.

I hate this.  I never, ever wanted to be like this.  I never wanted to be struggling to find a positive thing cling to.  Never wanted my feelings to rule my day.  Never wanted my circumstances to decide what kind of day I am going to have.  Or how I am going to feel.

Strange thing.

I feel like this blog can be a real depressing place for you all to visit.  I wonder why anyone would come over and read this?  Maybe it is because you feel the same way I do?   You find yourself feeling things you never wanted to feel?  Or dealing with circumstances you never dreamed you would deal with, and you come over here to read because you can relate.

Or you care.  And you pray.  And you hate seeing our long going process drag on and on, and you come over to speak a kind word, say a silent prayer, or you love on us in a physical way by being God’s hands of help to our family.

We are so blessed.  So very, very blessed.  I know that.  I really, really do.  I just don’t always “feel” it.  Does that make any sense?

I’d like to take the time to mention once again some of the wonderful blessings I have, you know, just to help my perspective…

* Our financial needs are met every month by our amazing church family.

* We have physical support daily from my parents and sisters.

* Our church family continually remembers us in prayer & physical support.

* I have wonderful friends who listen to me and pray for & with me.

* God has provided amazing counselors throughout this whole season.

* My children are healthy.

* My children are smart & (searching for another positive word here, coming up empty) uhhhh…. cute. (there we go cute is true.)

* I am healthy.

* I am so blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom  (see the first point) be there for my kids activities, be a room helper, drive my kids to their preschools,

* I have time to write.

Thanks for enduring with me, I really needed to remember that today.

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

2 Corinthians 4:7-9

Beautiful…

On Saturday we had the BIG party for Grandma’s 100th Birthday!  Family came from near and far to be with her.  Many, many of us are near… but I have a cousin & his family who live in Laos, that made it home for this party. And a cousin from Alaska who made it too!  Some came from Indy, but the large majority of us live very nearby.

Grandma was trilled with the pictures I took from her first party… I had Leah & 3 of my sister’s girls make them into two posters to put up at the party…

IMG_8237

I don’t think I have ever had a reason to notice that you can buy balloons & napkins with “100” on them!

IMG_8235 IMG_8236

One of my talented cousins made her a beautiful, huge cake!   Was she not just the most beautiful 100 year old you have ever seen!!

IMG_8238

We had our picture taken with her too…

James was at work and wasn’t able to get to the party.  But I was glad that he took my advice and stopped to visit her this week at her house.

I had to think of Grandma this week as we watched the final video of Beth Moore’s Esther study.  (yes, we finally finished!)

Beth was talking about it being “tough being a woman in a world where beauty is a treatment”.  Isn’t that the truth.

“In man’s realm, time diminishes beauty.  In God’s realm where we will spend forever, time perfects beauty.”

“Beauty in God’s  realm is not a treatment, it’s destiny”

Beth Moore, Esther Video 10

Amen, Beth.  Amen.

YOUR Gonna Miss This…Moment… Week 37

YGMT...moment 2

Wow.  At the end of an extremely busy summer day, I about want to opt out of putting up this post today!  Summer is so much fun, and so exhausting!!  What a wonderful combination!

I would love to challenge each of you to join me this week and all summer long in capturing moments that we want to remember forever.  Summertime is full of them and we are just headed into a summer full of them!  I would be so excited if many more of you joined my regular, faithful friends who join me in this!  Instructions will be at the end of this post.

Baseball.  Staying up late.  Zoo trips.  Cedar Point. Friends over.  Cousins.  Work.  Conditioning.  sleeping in.  Summer…

Our summer vacation just started this past Wednesday… already we have done each of the things mentioned above.  (well, some of us have)

James is working for a landscaping company.  He will work almost every day, until August, when football will start.  In the evenings he will either hang out with friends, or be conditioning for football.  The other night he rode his four-wheeler over to his friend’s house.  It started to rain, and he rode it home in the rain.  He came in dripping… I took his picture… and he posed…

IMG_8024

Cute, huh…

Zach won’t be doing too much work.  Work for me, and mowing at a neighbor’s house.  Conditioning with the football & the basketball team… while trying to (against his will) let his knee heal.  Spending as much time with friends as he can, and finishing his baseball season up.  He went to Cedar Point yesterday with the whole 8th grade.  Today grandpa took him and his cousin and 2 friends to a baseball game in Cincinnati.  Cubs vs. Reds.  Zach wore his Cubs shirt.  I’ve mentioned before we are in a hard age, we could use your prayers.

IMG_7546

random shot.

Leah made cheerleading, so I know her summer will involve some of that, I just don’t know what yet.  She has begged every day since school was out for friends to come over.  I expect it to continue daily…

DSC02383

Lucas is playing ball a lot these days!  As we make up rained out games we have been to the diamonds three nights this week!  I finally remembered my camera!

IMG_8224

Check out the smile he flashed me after he hit and made it to first!!  (fence is so annoying!!)

IMG_8228

Jadon got a hair cut…

DSC02417

He adores it.  I could do without it.  He is cute though.  Today at the zoo he was so funny!  He was afraid of the goats!  He is never afraid of things… goats. yup.  He went in and out of the pen 3 times, but he did keep at it and did conquer his fear!

DSC02420

Today at the zoo was the first time I believe we went strollerless! I love it!  I DONT miss pushing a stroller in a crowded place!  NOT AT ALL!!  Kiahna was a good girl.  Mostly.  Her ability to have a boundary with strangers is not very good.  Patting people, taking popcorn, kicking a stroller… needs boundaries.  Bad.

DSC02397

It is a yearly tradition for my mom to take us all to the zoo one day of the summer.  My sister’s baby is due in about a week, so she wanted to go before it is born.  I have always really been stressed out by going to the zoo with all the kids.  It is always so hot & crowded.

Today, though, I really enjoyed it.  It was crowded, very crowded, but it was such gorgeous high 70’s sunny, breezy weather that it was not even that annoying!  And my kids are getting older, so it was not quite as difficult to do this with them!!  I could actually say I will miss this, at these older ages!!

DSC02361

DSC02413

Too many moments to choose just one!!  What a great day!  I’m gonna miss it all!!

If you have never played along, I invite you to join in!  If you want to read the detailed description of how to play along read the guidelines here.

Vlogemotions: Week 4

This has been a fun week!  Celebrating Grandma’s birthday…you will just have to watch this and see my emotion…

When Jadon realized what I was doing, he wanted to get in on the “feelings” again!  I took this of him… I DID NOT (for real!) remind him about going to Tim’s Blog To play along!  He remembered that part on his own!  I was impressed!!

So, like Jadon said, go on over to visit Tim @ Ft Thompson to see all the vlogemotions!

Grandma’s Special Song

IMG_8131

One of the highlights of Grandma’s Party Last Night, was the surprise entertainment from locally acclaimed recording artists Psalm 100!  :)

IMG_8149

They topped of the evening with beautiful worship music & many laughs!  They ended the night with a failed attempt at Grandma’s favorite song from the church hymnal, a original creation written just for grandma…

Have you heard the great news?

We’ve got something to share

So grab a light snack

And pull up a chair

You might be surprised

You might say “no way”

But the second of June…

Is Vi Rin*ger’s birthday

Happy happy birthday

She’s turning one hundred

No more and no less

Exactly one hundred

So eat some ice cream

Don’t spill on the rug

Thank God for Vi Ring*er…

Oh give her a hug!!!

Check out her reaction…

IMG_8130 IMG_8117 IMG_8103

Don’t you just want to give her a hug!!

100 Years Ago today…

Most of us were not around… but my grandma, she was.  She was born 100 years ago today!!  Jadon, Kiahna,& I went over to her house this morning, to visit, take some pictures, and wish her a happy day!

IMG_8035

She was showing us her cards, and her gifts.  I asked her if I could take this picture, and she replied that she hoped “someone would take some pictures”  (giggle)

She told us that she was sewing this morning, I asked her to show me what she had been doing.  She is keeping busy making quilts for her great grandchildren… using this…

IMG_8037

IMG_8039

Soon the phone rang…

IMG_8040

It was one of my cousins calling from out of town to wish her a happy day…  then another cousin came in the door… then an uncle…

We left after that… she was all smiles!  Soaking it in!  I told her she might as well give up working on those quilts today, she was bound to have visitors and phone calls all day.  She was also pretty sure “that she would get some more cards in the mail today”!  She also wondered what the mail man would think and if we was going to come to the door expecting a bonus for all the extra mail this week!!  LOL!

I was thinking about some of my strongest memories of growing up next door to grandma…

Her rhubarb patch…

IMG_8046

…which we would go and pull, take in her house, cut up into tiny pieces, salt like crazy and eat all up!  We did it all the time!

Or these…

IMG_8048

Not yet in season, but her raspberry patch… planted between our house and theirs… which I filled my belly on many a summer afternoon…

I remember going over to their house Sundays after church for ice cream with fresh raspberries on them!

We spent much time over there.  Playing with cousins.  Eating her food. (French bread warmed in the microwave with butter!)  Watching her TV. (something we couldn't do at home) Running out the door when the phone would ring, then listening outside to hear if it was our mom calling for us to come home or not… because we weren't really supposed to be over there “again”!  Running back in if we realized it wasn’t her, or sprinting home pretending like we were never over there if it was!

So many wonderful memories!

Tonight there will be a dinner for adults only.  She has 6 children.  And I am not sure how many of the brothers and sisters of her generation are still alive… tonight I will know, I get the honor of going, with my sisters to serve them their meal!

Saturday there will be a picnic at the park!  ALL the family will be there!  From Grandma & Grandpa’s six children, there are 23 grandchildren… and from those 23 grandchildren, I have no idea how many great-grandkids there are… but if I asked grandma, I think she would know!  I’ll try to find out!  There is one great-great grandchild that I know of.  It will be a circus for sure!!

Grandma has such an amazing mind!  She has done the book work for the family business for all these years.  Dad only got them on the computer and lifted her load recently.  She just finished a Sudoku book!

It will be a wonderful celebration week for a wonderful lady!  What a blessing she is.  How thankful I am!

Happy Birthday Grandma!
